THE PERFECT DAY

Singapore, in the right order.

Start where the old city comes alive, follow the river into the Civic District, then finish with the lights of Marina Bay. It’s a full day on foot, with easy MRT or taxi shortcuts whenever you want them.

8:30 AM | Kaya toast at Ya Kun

Start at the Far East Square branch for kaya toast, soft-boiled eggs and kopi. It’s a very Singapore way to begin, and puts you right on the edge of Chinatown.

KALLAN NOTE Choose the Far East Square, 18 China Street branch for this route; Ya Kun has many locations.

THE KALLAN WALK

9:15 AM | Old Singapore to the Civic District

Far East Square → Buddha Tooth Relic Temple → Maxwell Food Centre → Boat Quay → Asian Civilisations Museum → National Gallery → Raffles Singapore.

Begin with Chinatown’s restored shophouses, then wander toward the temple. After lunch at Maxwell, continue toward the river: Boat Quay’s waterfront gives way to the stately Civic District. We finish at Raffles for a well-earned drink.

KALLAN NOTE Allow approximately 60–90 minutes of walking for this daytime route, spread across the morning and afternoon; temple visits, lunch and museum time are extra. The temple and Maxwell are very close together, so there is only a small turn between them. The map connects landmarks visually; use Google walking directions for turn-by-turn streets.

9:45 AM | Chinatown + Buddha Tooth Relic Temple

Take your time with the richly decorated temple and the surrounding lanes. Wander Pagoda Street and the shophouses before continuing to lunch.

KALLAN NOTE This is an active religious site. Dress respectfully, and check visitor access before entering.

12:00 PM | Lunch at Maxwell Food Centre

Make this your classic hawker-centre lunch. Go for Hainanese chicken rice or browse the stalls and follow your appetite. It’s wonderfully local, casual and a perfect contrast to the evening ahead.

KALLAN NOTE Popular stalls can sell out or have queues. Choose what looks good rather than structuring your entire day around one stall.

1:30 PM | Boat Quay + the river

Walk toward Boat Quay and follow the Singapore River. From the water, the old and new Singapore skylines sit beautifully together. Stop for photos and take the footbridges at your own pace.

2:15 PM | Asian Civilisations Museum

A lovely culture stop right beside the river. If you’re museum-minded, step inside; if not, enjoy the historic building, the riverside and a little more time wandering the Civic District.

KALLAN MOVE This is your natural air-conditioned break on a hot or rainy afternoon.

4:30 PM | A Singapore Sling at Raffles

Walk past the National Gallery and continue to Raffles Singapore. Have the original Singapore Sling at the Long Bar, a classic Singapore ritual worth doing once.

WHAT TO KNOW Long Bar is walk-in only for regular parties. A short queue is possible; if it’s busy, take in Raffles’ beautiful exterior and return later or skip the drink.

6:00 PM | Dinner near the bay

Choose a Singaporean dinner in the Civic District or a relaxed table by the bay before heading to the illuminated Merlion. Allow time to finish by about 7:15 PM so you can enjoy the skyline and still catch Spectra.

7:30 PM | The Merlion, lit up after dark

Walk to Merlion Park to see Singapore’s famous fountain illuminated, with Marina Bay Sands glowing across the water. Take a few minutes for the postcard view before continuing toward the show.

KALLAN NOTE Enjoy the Merlion until about 7:50 PM, then start the waterfront walk. It is longer than it appears from across the bay: allow 30–40 minutes via Esplanade and Helix Bridge, plus photo stops.

9:00 PM | Spectra, the grand finale

Follow the waterfront past Esplanade, cross the Helix Bridge, and continue to the Event Plaza outside Marina Bay Sands. Aim to arrive by 8:40–8:45 PM for the 9:00 PM Spectra light-and-water show, viewed from the Marina Bay Sands side.

KALLAN MOVE Spectra typically runs at 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM, with an additional 10:00 PM show on Friday and Saturday. Special events may change the schedule: check the official link before setting out. If you’re tired, take a taxi to Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza rather than rushing the walk.
